Material Magazine, Issue 1, Launch

Material is a new independent publishing project based in Glasgow, Scotland. The first issue of our magazine emerges from one of the most chaotic and disorientating moments in the city’s recent history. The far right is mobilized on the streets; battles over labour, housing, transport, the cost of living and political expression are raging; infrastructure is crumbling; and social, cultural and educational institutions are being picked apart, deliberately run down, or scrapped altogether. The ruthless critique of contemporary conditions—alongside an affirmation of processes of anti-capitalist struggle—is an urgent task in this maelstrom. By providing a space for incisive, pugnacious, in-depth writing on politics and culture, we hope Material can make a useful contribution to the infrastructure of critical, left-wing publishing in the city and beyond.
